Let’s get warmed up!
What
shall we shoot this week? Go out and shoot the ‘most colourful’ photo. Let’s
discuss!
LESSON#2
UNDERSTANDING LIGHT – 1
Since photography is
all about ‘drawing with light’, we need to know more about it! Light is the
basic necessity for any photograph.
WHERE DO WE GET LIGHT FOR PHOTOGRAPHY?
1. Natural light comes from the sun (or the moon,
maybe!).
Using natural light
means taking pictures with the light from the outdoors; whether it is morning
light, afternoon light or evening light.
2. Artificial light can come from light sources like bulbs,
tubelights, table lights and the camera’s own flash.
Today, we will talk only
about natural light.
HARD AND SOFT LIGHT
Soft Light: Soft light is less
bright and has very less shadows. It is the light you’d get on a cloudy day or
when the sun is coming in through a window curtain. The best time to get this
light is during ‘The Golden Hours’ of photography just after sunrise and just before sunset.
Hard Light: Hard light is quite
bright/intense and makes long and deep shadows. You usually find this during
the middle of the day/afternoon.
THE COLOUR OF LIGHT
Let’s
experiment…step outside and see what colour the light is right now!
Blue Light: you get this kind of
light just before sunrise or just after sunset, a time called ‘twilight’.
Golden Light: you get this kind of
light during sunrise or sunset. Your pictures will have lovely reds, yellows,
golden colours.
Bluish-Yellow: This kind of light is
found around midday. It’s harsh light that can be bright and warm at the same
time.
